Quality Time

I get the Parents magazine and it's always a great read. There are some great suggestions for discipline, some good tips for mom, great advice on "milestones", and my favorite the baby bloopers. I was reading the article Savor the Moments by Harley A. Rotbart, M.D and learned that a lot of parents don't spend enough time with their children (isn't that the case!) because they are busy working, cooking, fixing things, or other things.

The one thing that jumped out at me in this article was that "There are only 940 Saturdays between a child's birth and her leaving for college. That may sound like a lot, but how many have you already used up? If your child is 5 years old, 260 Saturdays are gone. Poof!" WHAT only 940? That's not even a thousand. I know that this time I have at home with my children is precious. This just makes it more real!

Now, the article does give suggestions on how to spend more time, but get some things done while your kids are by your side.

Take Pajama walks - get your kids dressed for bed and walk around the block, no snacks (they've already brushed their teeth), but have some family time, get a little exercise, and tire out the kids a bit.

Have taco night - theme dinners, kids are more likely to be in tune and enjoy dinner time. Quality time at the table. We firmly believe in having dinners together at the table as MUCH as possible.

Fix It Together - If you have to replace a furnace filter have your kid go with you and hold the flash light, then later when they are older you hold the flash light and they change it...teaching tool! LOVE this idea.

Don't Drive Everywhere - If some places are within walking distance, walk and enjoy the talk!

Play Their Games - play their games, board or digital!

Serve Ice-Cream Sundaes and Popcorn - Establish special traditions around fun treats!
