Advent Study for Children

Each year when Christmas time rolls around I think of different things I can do with my young
children (almost 5, 3, and 1). Something that they will comprehend and remember. I've done various devotions with the kids (some that we started but never finished). This year I'm going to try doing a Jesse Tree. I've heard of it, but I learned more about it in depth from Erica from Confessions of a Homeschooler. She explains the Jesse Tree:

The Jesse Tree gets it’s name from Isaiah 11:1-2 “A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. The Spirit of the Lord will rest upon Him.”

The main Branch is a Biblical sign of the expected coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ and the faithfulness of God. The other branches of the tree represent a piece of the stories that make up the whole story of God’s relationship with His people. As we read through the stories we see God’s people awaiting the coming of the Messiah. Similar to how we anxiously wait through each day of December in anticipation of celebrating the birth of our savior, Jesus Christ.

This is a great hands on way to teach the story of Jesus, to those young and old! If you want to find a copy of Erica's Jesse tree you can go to her website and download it!

What are you and your family doing to remember the story of Jesus this advent season?

What I'll be doing Friday...

This year I CAN go Black Friday shopping! YIIPPPEEE!!!!!!! Last year I couldn't. If you are new to my blog and don't know why, or can't remember, THIS was why! But not this year. This year I even get to shop in a BIG city, verses a smaller city in Idaho. This year I have most stores at my fingertips....or should I say steering wheel?

Yes, I am a CRAZY Black Friday shopper...however I'm not one of those Black Friday Shoppers. I don't take things from other people's carts (oh the stories I could tell you), I've learned to stay AWAY from WalMart. But I enjoy it. I hopefully will get to go with my sister in law...if she'll go with me. Yes she will think I'm crazy. Loose sleep over shopping....yup, that's me. Stand in line for 30 minutes to save 30 dollars, yup, that's me.

Here's what's on my Black Friday list, this year its simple, short and to the point. Do you have a list? Or are you one of those who stays in their PJs and shops online on Cyber Monday?

Fred Meyer: I LOVE that they give out FREE donuts....and that they don't open until 5am.
  • 50% off Socks. I'm stocking up, for everyone, for the year!
  • Board/Card Games, BOGO
  • Twin Sheets, on sale $4.99
  • Pjs for the kids 4.99 (instead of 19.99!)
  • Microwave (half off)
  • Anything else that catches my eye!!

Elf on the Shelf

I am not really current with Elf on the Shelf. We haven't ever done it. We don't own one yet. My step mom asked if we would like on, I told her if she wanted to buy one for thru kids, that'd be fine. I was doing my daily read of blogs and I came across this moms blog on what she does instead of Elf on the shelf, I think it is really neat and keeps the center of Christmas focused on Christ! While are kids are young, thru do understand what Christmas is about and how things work. I think its vital that we as parent instill from a young age why we do the things we do. Talk to your kids about why we believe in Jesus, who Jesus is, how to live a Godly life, and much more. Each day I strive to do my best as living a Godly life in example for the kids and do some teaching along the way.

Kitchen Time Saver

I came across this little video on how to save time with peeling an entire head of garlic. I was a bit skeptical at first, but BOY does it work amazingly. I used to unwrap them individually and waste parts of the garlic, but not anymore!!!

Quick, Easy Chili

Since we live in a rainy climate now, soup is something that warms our soles when its wet outside. We recently made Chili, and while our kids are soup fans, we enjoyed it!  I have been trying to use what canned goods we brought with us from our pantry in Idaho, so this is a simple, mot many ingredient recipe.

Chili

  •  1-2 labs of ground beef
  • 1 can of green Chiles
  • 1 can of red kidney beans
  • 1 can of Spicy Chili Beans
  • 2 packets of chili spices
  • 1 onion, chopped
Process:
  1. Brown hamburger and drain any excess grease.
  2. Add onions.
  3. Mix in chili powder.
  4. Put in a crackpot.
  5. Add remaining ingredients in a crackpot.
  6. Turn on low, and cook for 4-6 hours!
  7. Serve with fresh buns.

I'm BACK!!!!!!

Wow, it's been over 6 weeks since I've posted. I'm extremely SORRY. We moved from SE Idaho to the west coast. We now live in a city where there are a TON of coupon opportunities, along with many other "to do" things for kids. I'm excited to share them with you. I will also be sharing with you quick and easy recipes to make while on a time crunch and some fun kid things to do when its raining/snowing outside! Stay tuned. The rest of November will be great! I'll be back on Monday with a quick and easy Chili recipe that's quick, simple, and tasty! Until then, I'll be sorting through my small garage packed to the max with boxes!
